How Important is Lawn Care in Central Oregon
Landscape health is something many homeowners do not take
into consideration. Simply mowing and watering lawns will not improve the life
and health of the property. Edging, lawn care, mulching and pruning are
essential for the longevity of your lawn. There are two processes that involve
this choreography. Landscape Maintenance & Irrigation. Both are critical to
your land value and the longevity of your property.
Landscape Maintenance
There are four processes to maintaining your landscape. Lawn
care, edging, mulching and pruning. Lawn care involves soil testing, seed
awareness and planting (what type of species you have so we don’t plant the
wrong type – bluegrass, fescue or ryegrass) and cutting. Lawn care in Central
Oregon involves the right amount of water because of the high desert climate.
The cut of the grass is important too as the lower you cut the grass, the less
sun it gets for nutrition and the higher you cut is the same due to a covering
it produces.
Edging fulfills two purposes. Lines and look. The lines show
the border and give an appealing look to it. Edging blocks all kinds of species
from crossing its borders depending on how to lines were created. Edging also
keeps the lawn in place so there is no overgrowth. After all the edging is
complete (trimmed), the look is an art in itself. There are three types of
edging. Spading, curbing and trimming. All three processes involve durability
and resistance to erosion. Edging divides the landscape from all of its
elements.
Mulching helps the pH balance of a landscape and fertility
of the soil. Mulching attracts earthworms, controls pests, provides nutrients
for the soil, helps retain moisture, controls weeds and is very appealing to
the eye. Pruning is the removal of twigs, branches, buds or roots that are
diseased or damaged due to the climate. By eliminating decay and insects from
infesting a tree, for example, pruning allows more sunlight and oxygen to permeate.
All of the landscape maintenance above must work in tandem to keep the harmony
and ecosystem flourishing.
Irrigation
There are four common parts of irrigation in Bend, OR.
Activations, additions, installations and repairs. Without proper irrigation,
the landscape health dwindles fast. The high desert needs proper irrigation for
any landscape to exist. Every year, homeowners and businesses have to turn off
their underground sprinkler systems by shutting off the water and forcing the
water out of the pipes by force (pumps - blowing). This is due to the
unpredictability of freezing here in Redmond, OR. If this doesn’t happen, water
expands when it freezes and cracks pumps and pipes. Every year, we have to
check the pipes for leaks after activation.
Since the winters are harsh, additions happen every year due
to wear and tear or upgrades. Pipes and extensions actually twist and turn
during weather patterns so adjustments and additions are quite common. Repairs
are also common place every year for sprinkler systems. It’s important to
understand all of the sprinkler manufacturers (Hunter, Toro, Rain Bird. K-Rain,
Weathermatic, Hydro-Rain, Signature and Irritrol to name a few) as each one is
different. Additions sometimes are a hodge podge of mixing some of the above to
achieve certain flow and angles. Installations are performed by us. Here is a
handy checklist of what needs to be thought of before we start digging.
