How many landscaping companies are in Central Oregon and how to choose the right one


The yellow pages lists over 183 landscaping companies in the surrounding Bend, OR area. The US Census Bureau lists over 90,000 landscaping services nationwide so if we calculate the number of incorporated places nationwide 19,354 by 90,000, we get 21 per city. So, how many landscaping companies are actually in Bend, Sisters, Redmond, La Pine, Prineville and Madras? 21 companies times 6 cities are 126 so the yellow pages isn’t too far off.

Now that we know there are between 126 and 183 landscaping services in Central Oregon, how on Earth do we pick the right one for our personal or business needs? Here is a good list of questions to ask when choosing the right landscaping service:

Are they bonded, insured and have their contractor’s license?

There is a board for landscaping contractors and they need a pesticide license including a certificate of insurance provided by their insurance company. These are great questions to ask and to look for on their vehicles.

Do they operate with a business plan?

Many landscaping maintenance companies are small. The smaller the company, the less they are actually operating under a business plan with a budget. This may not be that big of a deal to some, but for reliability and longevity, a smooth running operation is a must. If your landscaping company doesn’t have an operating plan, how can they monitor and control growth to keep up with consistency and quality of your ecosystem?

What resources do they use to stay educated with?

Magazines, journals, website blogs, seminars, tradeshows and other education areas show the business owner is interested in maintaining their education on the subject. Managing an ecosystem isn’t easy. Same with managing clientele and their landscaping needs. Not all clients leave the care to the expert. Many customers are educated in their landscape and will most definitely know if a landscaper doesn’t know what they are doing.

One on one personalization

When looking for a landscaper in Bend, OR (for example), one must build a relationship with the landscaper. People skills should be a prerequisite when such a project is taken. The homeowner or business owner has an idea in mind and the landscaper should address those needs with listening skills and personalization skills.
