What is the difference between Springtime Landscape and
Irrigation and Mikes Irrigation?
Springtime Landscape and Irrigation overall is a great
company. We could not find one problem with them. So, here are the real
differences. Springtime Landscape is located in Bend, OR and Mikes irrigation
is located in Redmond, OR. Springtime has a little less than 40 employees with
annual revenues of around 2 – 3 million a year. Mike’s is smaller with less
than 5 employees with revenues of less than a million a year. They offer
landscape design, hardscapes (patios, fire places), pest control and winter
services like snow removal (holiday lighting). Mike’s does all except design
and hardscapes. They have a 4 ½ star Yelp rating and not one ripoff report.
They are not located on the better business bureau’s website.
With the exception of a few more products than us, the
differences are pretty subtle, right? So when choosing between a large
landscaping company in Bend, OR or a small landscaping company in Redmond OR,
how does one make the right decision? After all, this is your property and you
want the best at the right price. Believe it or not, there are huge differences
when choosing between a small company and a larger one. Let’s explore those
differences.
Customer Support
Larger companies have less personal customer support. This
isn’t their fault, however. The more people in one unit, the easier it is for
information to slip through the cracks. A lack of proper communication can lead
a customer to wander elsewhere. Sometimes it can take days to get feedback or a
returned call just like it takes years for a new idea or product to be
developed. “Layered management” is the issue as it’s harder to focus on the
little things like customer support, while they focus on the bigger picture
which is “profit”.
Larger companies can also be too structured. So structured
that they can operate like a government bureau. Policies and procedures can
take place over feelings and common sense. In example, larger companies have
manuals on how to deal with an upset customer. This cookie cutter approach can
harm relations rather than just contacting and listening to a customer. Doing
everything by the book is ok, but it lacks spontaneous movement and creative
amplification.
Employee Morale
Morale for employees in smaller companies is better. In
example, Instead of punching in and punching out or being monitored during a
lunch break, an employee at a smaller company tends to have more freedom. Springtime
Landscape and Irrigation, as we stated above, has a huge overhead and profit
can get in the way of employee retention. It’s a fact that employees are more
productive in smaller companies.
Pricing
Smaller companies with less overhead can undercut
competition. If a small company has been in business for over 5 years, odds are
that they have gone through the hurdles of startup issues, taxes and the like.
If a small company, like us, have been in business over 10 years, they chose to
stay small for more profit and that is the sign that you chose a good company.
The smaller, the better.
